When Evil Lurks

When Evil Lurks
2023
7
Director:
Demián Rugna

SYNOPSIS:

In a remote rural village in Argentina, brothers Pedro and Jimi Yazurlo discover a man, a "rotten" (marcio), possessed by a demon whose "gestation" is nearing its end. The malevolent entity has remained in the body for too long, and its emergence is imminent, risking an epidemic of possessions throughout the community. In a desperate attempt to stop the Evil, the brothers ignore the ancient, dark "rules" for handling such cases and, without the help of authorities, decide to dispose of the possessed man. Their actions, however, only accelerate the contagion, transforming the Evil from a single isolated case into an unstoppable demonic plague. The two embark on a frantic escape to protect their loved ones, while the Evil spreads in a visceral and brutal way, corrupting people, animals, and the surrounding environment.

REVIEW:

"When Evil Lurks" is an overwhelming and relentless work that bravely steps away from the subgenre's clichés. Director Demián Rugna plunges us into a ruthless and visceral rural nightmare, establishing from the very first minutes that the rules are different here: there are no exorcist priests, no comforting prayers, and no easy way out. There is only a primal Evil, contagious like a virus and incomprehensible, spreading illogically and mercilessly. What makes the film exceptional is its brutality and honesty in depicting horror. Rugna does not shy away from extreme splatter scenes and the most gruesome body horror, utilizing practical effects to make every moment of violence shocking and memorable. The Evil is not just a spiritual force, but a physical disease that deforms and corrupts, leaving behind a trail of moral and bodily decay. The film also excels in its setting. The isolation and poverty of the Argentinian countryside amplify the sense of despair; the protagonists are ordinary people, defenseless against a supernatural threat, whose failure to follow the protocols intensifies the drama. The terror is constant, fueled not only by effective jump scares but by a palpable tension and the dreadful realization that anyone can be infected or corrupted, even the innocence of children. "When Evil Lurks" is a jarring, ferocious, and deeply pessimistic experience that works both as a pure, high-tension horror spectacle and as a bleak metaphor for institutional indifference and the spread of Evil in society. It is a masterpiece of modern horror that redefines demonic possession, leaving the viewer breathless with the sense that, in this world, there truly is "no point in praying."

An Abyss of Identity and Terror Taking Lives is far from a standard police procedural; it is a claustrophobic plunge into psychological horror that preys on the unsettling anxiety of identity theft. The atmosphere is saturated with a sense of looming doom, featuring cinematography that evokes a visceral, disturbing tension typical of the finest psychological thrillers. The true pillar of the... Iron Lung

2025

An Immersion into Claustrophobic Nightmare Iron Lung marks the cinematic directorial debut of Mark Fischbach (Markiplier), and it does so with a vision that bets everything on psychological tension and body horror. The film perfectly translates the essence of the original material: that suffocating feeling of being trapped in a metal box, surrounded by an ocean of blood on an alien moon. The strength of the film lies in its industrial and grimy aesthetic. Markiplier’s direction doesn't hunt for cheap jump scares; instead, it builds constant dread through sound design—... Read More

Ash

2025

"Ash" presents itself as a visually hypnotic work that blends claustrophobic science fiction with a "mindbender" psychological thriller. Under the visionary direction of musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus, the film moves away from classic space-opera tropes to focus on a visceral narrative charged with tension. The strength of the film lies in the chemistry between the two leads, Eiza González and Aaron Paul, who successfully convey a constant sense of paranoia. The cinematography is dominated by crimson tones and deep blacks (as suggested by the poster), creating a... Read More
