Dream Scenario is a sharp, surreal satire on "cancel culture" and the volatile nature of fame in the social media era. Director Kristoffer Borgli crafts a black comedy that flirts with psychological horror, using the dream device to explore how a person’s public image can be distorted and destroyed by the masses.
The film's strength lies almost entirely in Nicolas Cage’s performance. The actor strips himself of all heroic charisma to play a small, clumsy, and deeply human man. It is heartbreaking to watch his desperate search for relevance turn into a prison of isolation. The direction skillfully blends faded, mundane daily reality with vivid, sometimes grotesque dream sequences.
The film does not attempt to provide scientific explanations for the phenomenon, preferring to focus on the sociological consequences. The second half of the movie accelerates into a fierce critique of marketing and technology, suggesting that even our most private mental spaces are no longer safe from commodification. It is an original, disturbing, and profoundly melancholy work that confirms Borgli’s talent for narrating the contemporary absurd.
Produced by Ari Aster. We find a great Nicolas Cage thrown into a story so absurd that it is hard to believe it is based on a true story. The film moves brilliantly between the horror, surreal comedy and drama genres in a disturbing atmosphere bordering on the grotesque, both the comical situations and the disturbing and mysterious ones are very successful. All emphasized by an evocative soundtrack. Absolutely worth seeing.
