Sinister
Ellison Oswalt, a true crime writer whose fame is waning, moves his family into a house where a horrific murder occurred: the previous occupants, an entire family, were hanged. Ellison hopes to use the tragedy as inspiration for his next book, convinced that by investigating directly on location, he will be able to shed light on the case.
While exploring the house, he discovers a box in the attic containing a projector and several Super 8 film reels simply labeled "Home Movies." Initially, he believes them to be discarded family footage. However, when he watches them, he discovers with horror that each reel depicts the brutal murders of different families that occurred in different locations and times, all linked by the same gruesome staging.
As Ellison investigates the footage and searches for a common link among the victims, his family begins to be tormented by unsettling and inexplicable phenomena. The writer realizes that his obsession has led him to confront not just a serial killer, but an ancient and malevolent supernatural entity known as Bughuul, a pagan demon who feeds on the souls of children after persuading one of them to murder their family and film the massacre. Ellison must fight to save his family before the entity claims its next "artist" and its next victim.
"Sinister," directed by Scott Derrickson, is a horror film that successfully grips the viewer thanks to constant and suffocating tension, setting it apart in the genre landscape. The story of Ellison Oswalt, a declining true crime writer who moves his family into a house that was the scene of horrific murders, is a journey into obsession and terror that strikes deep and disturbing chords. The Soundtrack: The Most Horrific Part of the Film. It is necessary to emphasize how the most terrifying and defining element of the film is its soundtrack. The compositions and musical choices, curated by Christopher Young (who also selected tracks from artists like Ulver and Aghast), are a true sonic weapon. These are not just background scores, but hypnotic, pounding, sometimes distorted, and jarring sounds that anticipate or accompany the moments of greatest horror. This sonic score acts directly on the viewer's nervous system, creating a persistent sense of dread and unease, almost as if the film's evil resides within its frequencies. The music fundamentally contributes to making the "Super 8 home movies" sequences particularly terrifying. A Film Resting on the Shoulders of Ethan Hawke. The second crucial strength, key to the work's success, is the performance of Ethan Hawke in the role of the protagonist, Ellison Oswalt. The film rests almost entirely on his shoulders. Hawke is impeccable in conveying the intensity and progression of his character's breakdown. He presents us with a selfish man, obsessed with lost success and willing to risk his family for a new best-seller. His descent into paranoia and horror, triggered by the discovery of the home movies, is rendered with impressive skill. The actor manages to sustain the entire narrative, embodying the archetype of the tormented, solitary investigator who finds himself trapped in something inexplicable and far greater than him.
In Summary.
"Sinister" is a solid and well-constructed horror film that, while utilizing some classic themes (like the "evil child" figure and the supernatural entity Bughuul), develops them intelligently. It is a film that works due to a winning combination:
Ethan Hawke's intense and focused performance.
A soundtrack that is, in itself, an element of terror.
The result is a suspenseful film that delivers moments of genuine, deep fright.
